Lancet retracts controversial autism study
Twelve years ago, Dr. Andrew Wakefield published a study in the Lancet that linked autism with childhood vaccines, triggering an explosive controversy that continues to influence public opinion about the potential side effects of vaccines. This week, the scientific publication formally retracted the report, saying it contained false information. And Wakefield may lose his license to practice medicine in the U.K. Nevertheless, Wakefield still has a fierce band of defenders who adamantly believes there is a link, despite a mountain of scientific evidence to the contrary.
