The New York Review of Books has taken a detailed look at the emerging polio crisis in Syria, digging into the current situation and its causes. Since May, Syria has experienced more than 90 cases of polio, each of which has occurred in a region long opposed to President Bashar al-Assad. Before the war the Assad regime reportedly stopped providing vaccinations and sanitation for these areas, laying the groundwork for the current polio crisis. Feature
